Road transport

Road transport accounts for about one quarter of the EU’s total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. To reach the EU’s 2050 climate neutrality goal, transport emissions must be reduced by 90% by mid-century. To support the transition to clean road mobility in Europe, CO2 emission standards have been set for new cars, vans, and heavy-duty vehicles, with progressively increasing emission reduction targets for vehicle manufacturers. These standards provide long-term certainty and predictability for investors along the value chain, while allowing sufficient time for a fair transition. Additionally, the Car Labelling Directive supports car buyers in making sustainable choices, contributing to cleaner road transport.
